{"id":52,"date":"2005-05-10T23:29:31","date_gmt":"2005-05-11T06:29:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stevegerber.wpengine.com\/?p=52"},"modified":"2005-05-10T23:29:31","modified_gmt":"2005-05-11T06:29:31","slug":"the-single-syllable-principle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stevegerber.com\/?p=52","title":{"rendered":"The Single-Syllable Principle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A basic truth of American politics: When any debate has been reduced to words of one syllable, the Republcans have already won it.<\/p>\n<p>The latest example: The battle over our Proxident&#8217;s judicial appointments, an argument which the Republican stupefaction machine has successfully reduced to the phrase, &#8220;Up-or-down vote.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There have been distortions on both sides of this debate, certainly, but in my opinion, the Republicans&#8217; warping and wefting has been an order of magnitude greater than that of the other side.<\/p>\n<p>Judge &#8212; no pun intended &#8212; for yourself. Here&#8217;s<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/article325m.html\">FactCheck.org<\/a>&#8216;s  article on the ads being run by the two sides.<\/p>\n<p>John Dvorak&#8217;s blog offers a more biting perspective under the title, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dvorak.org\/blog\/?p=1953\">Pro-Age Discrimination Judge Supported by New Christian Right Agenda<\/a>.&#8221;  Of course, that headline utilizes words of more than one syllable, so we can safely assume nobody will pay any attention.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A basic truth of American politics: When any debate has been reduced to words of one syllable, the Republcans have already won it.
