Making Progress…

Another day or so, and I should be able to get my head above water long enough to splutter out a post or two.

This much I can tell you already: DOCTOR FATE is turning out to be an extremely interesting, highly unconventional series. It’ll probably be yet another love-it-or-hate-it book — I seem to specialize in those — but my hunch is, we’ll be getting more hearts and flowers than letter bombs on this one.

Does anyone know if DC’s made any announcement recently regarding the creative personnel on the book?

Are we at war with Iran yet? (I’m not kidding when I say I’ve been burrowed in.)

Yeah, DC announced this a few weeks back:

DOCTOR FATE #1 GETS ART UPDATE

Please note that the art team for DOCTOR FATE #1 (FEB070270) has been changed. This issue now will be illustrated by Justiniano & Waldon Wong, with a cover by Paul Gulacy.

  2. Bart Lidofsky Says:

We aren’t at war with Iran yet, but if their agents keep trying to assassinate the Vice President, it won’t be long.

  3. Stephen Abrams Says:

I’ve never read a Doctor Fate story (except for the stories with Ralph Dibny in 52), but I am really looking forward to this book. I hope that it will be accessible for new readers.

  4. petetheretailer Says:

An inside source tell me that they’re pushing back the launch of the book to accommodate the artist change. (DC, not Iran)

  5. petetheretailer Says:

    err…tells

  6. Andrew B Says:

Come on Steve… give us some tidbits for the premier 🙂

Wish I’d known that, because I wanted to discuss it here with all of you.

I will, in a day or twain.

  8. Steve Gerber Says:

Pete: “An inside source tells me that they’re pushing back the launch of the book … ”

I wasn’t aware of that, either — but if it’s true, it’s not hard to guess why nobody mentioned it to me.

Very much so. The first issue recaps everything you need to know from the recent DAY OF VENGEANCE special and the HELMET OF FATE one-shots. From that point on, we’re dealing with what is essentially a brand new character.

..but we’ve known this for some time. 😉

The sad reality is that if our leader had been honest with his motivations and true with his target, this situation wouldn’t be playing out like this right now and we’d be dealing with terrorists and not nations. Iran is providing support for these organizations to cause chaos in Iraq, which has been its goal for decades, not to destroy the U.S…. our country simply gave them a stronger influence in that area.

Since 52 has the tower of Fate in it what about some repercussions from that in your book?

  12. Steve Gerber Says:

Starcotes: “Since 52 has the tower of Fate in it what about some repercussions from that in your book?”

The truth: I don’t know exactly what the *52* team has planned. I do know this: *52*’s editor and writers have assured Joey Cavalieri and me that nothing they’ve done will impinge on the new DOCTOR FATE series.

If I were a reader of *52* — and I am — I would interpret that to mean that all may not be as it seems in *52*, at least regarding Doctor Fate.

  13. mister_pj Says:

Yeah, this week’s (or was it last weeks?) 52 has Ralph Dibny trapping Neron in the Tower of Fate.

Not really sure how they’re going to work that one out though because I have a feeling the plotline isn’t completely resolved as yet.

Caught the last portion of the DC Nation panel at NY Comic Con. Don’t remember them mentioning Fate but, I came late and it could have been part of the program earlier. I’ll have to go back and listen to the notes I kept just to be sure I didn’t miss anything.

I’ve read Fate quite a bit through the years – from the Nelson’s, to the McManus run on the book and even the stuff that was done by Johns in JSA. It’s a character with a real patchwork backstory at this point.

Picked up and enjoyed the Black Alice/Helmet of Fate thing last week but, I don’t know how these things will impact the book going forward.

I have a feeling you are going to take it in a whole new direction so I’m not worried about it.

  14. Starocotes Says:

@Steve: We allready know that the helmet of Fate in 52 is in truth Felix Faust, but I was under the impression that the tower of Fate was the REAL tower of Fate. Or is even that in question?

  15. Steve Gerber Says:

The new Doctor Fate will be starting life without any real estate, so I wouldn’t assume too much about the tower that appears in *52*. It may indeed turn out to be “real”– I honestly don’t know — but if it does, it belonged to the *last* Doctor Fate, not the new kid.

  16. Steve Gerber Says:

PJ: “Picked up and enjoyed the Black Alice/Helmet of Fate thing last week but, I don’t know how these things will impact the book going forward.”

BLACK ALICE was terrific, wasn’t it?

I hope you didn’t miss DETECTIVE CHIMP and that you intend to pick up ZAURIEL. (SARGON and IBIS are very nice, too, and highly recommended, but most of the setup material for the Fate series appears in the books with…well, the angel and the ape.)

If anyone did forgo D.C. or decide against ZAURIEL, don’t panic. We cover the necessary info in DOCTOR FATE #1.

  17. Starocotes Says:

So no tower of Fate in your book then ?

🙁 I hope he still will be based in Salem?

Can’t wait to finally get my hands on the book. And I for one won’t miss the Zauriel one shot. I bought all the others so it would be stupid to miss that, wouldn’t it?

  18. Scott Says:

Wikipedia has just declared Jennifer Kale to be a character of mid-level importance while Dr. Fate is considered to be a character of low importance. Flattering?

  19. Fred Chamberlain Says:

    >Wikipedia has just declared Jennifer Kale to be a character of mid-level importance while Dr. Fate is considered to be a character of low importance. Flattering?

Nope, simply Wikipedia continuing to display inaccurate information with all of the integrity that an editing system open to all of its viewers can provide. 😉

  20. Steve Gerber Says:

Starcotes: “So no tower of Fate in your book then ?”

I didn’t say that. I said he doesn’t *start* his career with any real estate. Over time, he could acquire a Condo of Fate, a Tudor of Fate, maybe even a new Tower of Fate.

He starts his career without an amulet, also, by the by.

One thing I very much want to accomplish with this series is a sense that it develops *organically*, rather than according to some predetermined blueprint. I’d rather give readers an experience than a package.

Starcotes: “I hope he still will be based in Salem?”

Nope, I have to disappoint you on this one. But I think you’ll approve of the new location when you see how it works with the character.

  21. Starocotes Says:

From the Cover to #2 I would take the wild guess that it is Las Vegas???

Starocotes: “From the Cover to #2 I would take the wild guess that it is Las Vegas???”

Give that man a pass to the buffet!

  23. Starocotes Says:

Frankly I don’t like that one bit. The Tower in Salem as a crossroads to all places was for me a very neat idea and important part of what I thought made Dr. Fate.

Regardless I’m confident that your vision can capture my interest as well.

  24. mister_pj Says:

Yeah, I picked up the Detective Chimp/Fate book. Personally, Detective Chimp hasn’t ever been a fave of mine although he has gotten a lot more play over the last two years.

I can’t really say whether the story really hit me one way or the other – it was a decent enough story, as I said it’s not a character I’m nuts about.

Black Alice on the other hand may be able to tap into the whole audience that found the Death character so intrguing. I think overall she has a lot of potential – given her age, power potential and style.

    Condo of Fate?

How about Section 8 Housing of Fate?

I mean none of these guys manage to get rich off of being Doctor Fate now do they?

  25. Mario Di Giacomo Says:

How about a loft over the Oblivion Bar? 🙂

I love those “everywhere and nowhere” type things….

  26. Fred Chamberlain Says:

I love it Mario. Can you imagine a frustrated and sleep-deprived Dr. Fate in a nightshirt, stomping on his floor in a vain attempt to quiet doen the neighbors?
