Ode to Joy

December 16th, 2007 by Steve Gerber

Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve posted here.

It’s the usual litany of excuses. A little illness. A big deadline (still not met). Not enough sleep. Too much aggravation. Not very different from what goes on in anybody’s life, I’d imagine.

There’s been progress on the UCLA front toward getting me on the transplant list. I may have more to report tomorrow.

I’m working on Doctor Fate, of course, and doing some preliminary thinking on another project I can’t discuss quite yet. (Soon, though.)

I had a dream last night about the ex. I don’t think she reads this blog anymore, but on the off-chance she does, she’ll be happy to hear the dream was rather coldly realistic about the nature of past relationships. Sometimes my mind knows what it should be thinking, even if I don’t.

There’s cat vomit on the rug again.

Oh, well. Back to the relentlessly upbeat life of Dr. Kent V. Nelson. I’ll check in again later if there’s news.

Odd Question

In the post immediately below this one (“THE PULSE on Doctor Fate”), do you see chevrons or black dots before the two indented paragraphs?

THE PULSE on Doctor Fate

December 6th, 2007 by Steve Gerber

Sorry I didn’t find these sooner:

  • Bruce MacIntosh summarizes the Doctor Fate continuity and offers commentary on the new series on THE PULSE in an article entitled “WHO COUNTS IN COUNTDOWN to Infinite Crisis? – Episode 22 – DR. FATE”. (Feel free to comment on the commentary — politely. Lots of discussion on major news sites like PULSE can only help the book.)
  • There’s also a nice interview on the site with Doctor Fate inker extraordinaire Walden Wong, including some gorgeous black-and-white sample pages from CtM #4.

I’ve also done an interview with Jen Contino that should be appearing soon.

Back to Work, Finally…

November 28th, 2007 by Steve Gerber

I seem to have a working computer again.

I definitely have an extremely urgent deadline to contend with.

Don’t expect much in the way of posts the rest of this week. Justiniano is waiting for something to draw, and providing that material takes precedence over just about anything else. Since this will also contribute mightily to keeping COUNTDOWN TO MYSTERY on schedule, I think most of you will understand.

Besides, after all this time restoring the computer, I’m eager to actually use it for something again. And I’m very anxious to get back to Doctor Fate.

See you again when I can resurface.

Weekly Weigh-In #1-a

November 28th, 2007 by Steve Gerber

So. Down to a manageable 20 mg of prednisone a day and pretty much back to square one. Everything old is new again. Or just fat again.

Whichever — once more unto the breach, dear friends, to oppose the Cosmic Thwart.

Is COUNTDOWN TO MYSTERY #3 Out?

Have you seen it?

Have you read it?

What did you think?

Informal Survey…

November 22nd, 2007 by Steve Gerber

What are the Windows-based among you using as an email client these days? Outlook? Outlook Express? Thunderbird? Something else?

My ex turned me on to Eudora (among other things) a number of years ago, and I’ve stuck with that. There’s a lot I like about the program, but it’s recently been orphaned by its publisher (Qualcomm), which probably means I should start looking into something new.

(Hmm. Just noticed I’ve worn down the little ridges on the home key caps to the point I can barely feel them anymore. Maybe I should just donate my debit card to a computer store…)

My Next Two Tasks…

November 21st, 2007 by Steve Gerber

…are to master Norton Ghost, so I don’t have to go searching for individual files to restore from its backups…

…and to write the next Doctor Fate, because DC needs it immediately.

After that, I may have one or two surprises to discuss.

Spoke to UCLA yesterday. Nothing new. They’re still attempting to deal with the insurance company.

Have a good holiday, all.

Lonelier than Writing

November 20th, 2007 by Steve Gerber

My Windows registry is so corrupt it makes the Bush Justice Department look honest.

Blew an entire day getting organized, backing up whatever I could from the hard disk, compiling a couple of emergency CDs for the restoration process, making sure I had reg numbers for all the programs I’d need to reinstall. I’m still not quite finished.

Norton Ghost balked at the space available to it for backup on my external hard drive, so I ordered a larger one from Amazon — like that’s where I need to be spending money right now. (But I’m seriously wondering whether I should replace the internal drive, as well.)

It’s all a very lonely and unrewarding enterprise. Eventually, I hope, there’ll be a victory over bad data to celebrate, but it’s still at least a day away.

It’s been five years since the ex left, I think. I find myself both missing and resenting her a lot tonight. Isn’t that strange?
