Can anyone give me a brief (one- or two-paragraph) summary of Mark Millar’s version of the Defenders in *Ultimates* Vols. 1 and 2? (No, there’s no problem with Mark Millar. No, this has nothing to do with suing anybody. It has to do with a potential future project and the wish to avoid accidental similarities.)

Ooh! Dark!

Friday, July 29th, 2005

I wish I could concentrate. There’s a post I’m dying to write about how utterly laughable “dark” comics have become. I have this vision of a villain who skins his victims alive, debones them, shatters the bones and uses the splinters as toothpicks with which to eat their eyeballs as hors d’oeuvres while reclining in […]

Sick Leave

Wednesday, July 27th, 2005

Truly — I haven’t abandoned this blog. I’ve been ill all week, and though I seem to be improving a bit, I’m still functioning at a *lot* less than optimum. I’ve been to the doctor. I’m doing what’s necessary to deal with the problem. I appreciate your concern and your patience.

*Something* good had to come from feeling this shitty. I’ve lost eight or nine pounds in the past week. For the first time in too many years, I’m under 200. Probably won’t last long, but I figured I should try to enjoy it.

And By Opposing…

It’s a strange time. A lot of people I know are in trouble right now — financial difficulties, computer disasters, marital debacles, medical woes. The gastroenterologist wants to put me on a steroid that makes you inflate like a dirigible. I told her no. I’d sooner take one shot in the arm and go to […]

Haunted Wind

Wednesday, July 20th, 2005

Still…repercussing, but feeling a little better. Attempted solid food today. Actually left the house for an hour or so after the sun went down. So far, so good. Random thoughts: The heat is starting to break in Las Vegas and the local news is warning of thunderstorms to come. The wind that precedes those storms […]

Enervation

Tuesday, July 19th, 2005

I’ve been really sick the past couple of days, unable to eat solid food without…immediate repercussions. I hate this. I hate being attacked by my own body. It’s exhausting and infuriating and I’d rather be thinking about Karl Rove and why he’s going to get away with this latest outrage because the same people who […]

Things to Do…

Monday, July 18th, 2005

* Stay off solid foods for another day or two. (I’ve been sick.) * Relive and forget. (I’ve been cryptic.) * Have another major commercial success before I die.

Life By the Slice

Saturday, July 16th, 2005

It’s been a mixed day: The annoying flare-up of a chronic health problem. (Nothing life-threatening, just a massive drain on the energy.) A productive editorial conversation about *Hard Time*. A collaborative writing session best described as “antsy.” A tentative solution to a troublesome story problem. Pizza. A little too much Sci-Fi Channel. A long drive […]

The Universe is Composed of Vibrating Strings and the First Cello is Playing My Song

Friday, July 15th, 2005

Then the universe grabbed me by the lapels, slapped me repeatedly about the face and snarled, “Snap out of it, asshole!” I haven’t yet, not quite, but I am amazed at the lengths the cosmos will go to get my attention. In addition to all the encouraging comments about yesterday’s post, in addition to some […]
